Latin Program in Gainesville

At the FIG, students begin studying Latin in 3rd grade, discovering the roots of the Romance languages while enhancing their vocabulary and grammar skills. Latin provides a unique lens into ancient history, politics, and culture, reinforcing lessons learned across other subjects in our integrative classical curriculum.
Why Study Latin?
Latin is more than a language. It’s a gateway to understanding civilization, cultivating virtue, and strengthening the mind. At The FIG, students:
-
Enhance Communication Skills – mastering vocabulary and grammar in Latin deepens their ability to express ideas eloquently in English.
-
Develop Critical Thinking & Patience – translating texts and analyzing grammatical forms teaches diligence, focus, and perseverance.
-
Engage with Timeless Ideas – from history and mythology to philosophy and political speeches, students encounter texts that reflect both ancient and modern human experiences.
-
Cultivate Character – students practice humility, prudence, gratitude, and hope as they interact with enduring ideas and traditions.
As our Latin teacher notes, “Studying Latin is a window into the past, and a mirror to hold up to the present. Students gain the tools to think deeply, act virtuously, and communicate effectively.”
Academic and Competitive Opportunities
The FIG’s Latin students actively participate in the Florida Junior Classical League’s State Forum, a statewide event that brings together schools from across Florida. Students engage in:
-
Academic competitions such as written exams and quiz-bowl style certamen
-
Creative contests including models, declamations, and game design
-
Athletic events and community activities that celebrate the richness of classical culture
Through these opportunities, FIG students consistently demonstrate skill, creativity, and dedication. Their involvement not only showcases academic achievement but also builds confidence, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for the classical tradition.
