1st Grade Private School in Gainesville

At the Frazer Institute for Greatness (the FIG) in Gainesville, our 1st Grade Program is designed to nurture young learners as they take their first big steps in reading, mathematics, history, science, and language arts. We believe that greatness starts early, and in first grade, students begin cultivating the skills and character that will guide them for years to come.

What First Grade Looks Like at the FIG

In 1st grade, we build on kindergarten foundations, blending rigorous academics with joy, discovery, and character formation. Key components include:

  • Reading & Phonics: Students continue their journey in reading using phonics foundations. They deepen understanding of stories — including hero myths from the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians — and develop reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

  • Grammar & Writing: Foundational grammar skills are established, and students are guided in writing clearly. Penmanship and basic composition are emphasized, setting the stage for stronger writing in later grades.

  • Mathematics: Early math studies focus on basic operations, number sense, and logical thinking. Tools like Beast Academy and The Art of Problem Solving are used in later grades; in first grade, the emphasis is on establishing a logical framework for future learning.

  • History & Stories: Even in first grade, students are exposed to historical narratives and ancient cultures. Through stories from early civilizations (like Greece, Rome, and Egypt), students begin to see history as a living record of human ideas and values.

  • Science & Nature: Science in first grade introduces students to observation, inquiry, and the basics of the natural world (plants, animals, simple physical phenomena), blending wonder with logic.

  • Specials & Enrichment: Students also enjoy art, music, physical education, and recess — all of which support creativity, motor skills, and social learning.

Why the FIG 1st Grade Is Exceptional

Choosing The FIG for first grade means choosing more than academics. Students here develop in multiple dimensions:

  • Logical reasoning & habit-of-mind: First grade at the FIG isn’t just about correct answers; it’s about asking good questions, learning to think well, and building disciplined habits.

  • Language skills that last: Strong grounding in reading, grammar, and vocabulary equips students to be strong communicators — both written and spoken.

  • Moral and cultural foundations: Stories from history and myth teach virtue, courage, humility, and the importance of community.

  • Integrated learning: The FIG’s curriculum connects subjects, so that reading and history reinforce grammar, science connects to math, and every area supports broader growth.

Evergreen Features & Long-Term Growth

  • Foundations for future success: The academic skills acquired in 1st grade at the FIG prepare students well for the more advanced Latin, grammar, mathematics, and sciences they will encounter in upper grades.

  • Consistent curriculum progression: The program builds logically from year to year. What a student learns in first grade sets them up smoothly for 2nd grade and beyond.

  • Character & curiosity: Alongside academics, first graders are encouraged to ask questions, show kindness, and develop a love for learning that carries through their academic journey.
