At the Frazer Institute for Greatness (the FIG) in Gainesville, our 1st Grade Program is designed to nurture young learners as they take their first big steps in reading, mathematics, history, science, and language arts. What First Grade Looks Like at the FIG

In 1st grade, we build on kindergarten foundations, blending rigorous academics with joy, discovery, and character formation. Key components include:

  • Reading & Phonics: Students continue their journey in reading using phonics foundations. They deepen understanding of stories — including hero myths from the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians — and develop reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

  • Grammar & Writing: Foundational grammar skills are established, and students are guided in writing clearly. Penmanship and basic composition are emphasized, setting the stage for stronger writing in later grades.

  • Mathematics: Early math studies focus on basic operations, number sense, and logical thinking. Tools like Beast Academy and The Art of Problem Solving are used in later grades; in first grade, the emphasis is on establishing a logical framework for future learning.

  • History & Stories: Even in first grade, students are exposed to historical narratives and ancient cultures. Through stories from early civilizations (like Greece, Rome, and Egypt), students begin to see history as a living record of human ideas and values.

  • Science & Nature: Science in first grade introduces students to observation, inquiry, and the basics of the natural world (plants, animals, simple physical phenomena), blending wonder with logic.
